    Notes:

    W. H. Calhoun, 73, died at 3 o'clock Sunday morning at his residence at Shell Creek following a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Calhoun; six children, Clarence of Elizabethton, Oscar of Shell Creek, Jeff Calhoun and Mrs. Mike Peters of Hampton, Tate Calhoun and Mrs. Sam Harrison of Shell Creek; four brothers, Dave of Erwin, John, Fork, Tillmon of Newland, N.C.; two sisters, Sarah of Crossnore and Nannie of Ashe County, N. C.; 38 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held Sunday at 10 o'clock a.m. at the Evergreen Church at Shell Creek with the Rev. Earnest Buck and the Rev. Handy Wilcox officiating. Burial will be at the Fort Mount Cemetery at Newland. Active pallbearers will be Jack Winters, Lacey Shell, Shelton Hazelwood, Jim Greene, Ester Shell and Harton Winters. The body was removed to the residence Saturday afternoon.

    Oscar Cleo Calhoun, 83, Rt. 9, Elizabethton, died Tuesday in the V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home; following an extended illness. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was the son of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun was a member of the North Side Baptist Church, a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation, a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post No. 2166. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Nicky Walker, and by two brothers, Tate and Clarence Calhoun. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Fannie Presnell Calhoun, of the home; two sons, Roger Calhoun, Elkhart, Ind., and H.L. Calhoun, Mishawaka, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. David (Lillian) Watts, Larnburg, N.C., Lucille Powell and Joyce Pierce, both of Elizabethton; one brother, Jeffie Calhoun, Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Mike (Texie) Peters, Hampton, and Mrs. Sam (Grace) Harrison, Elizabethton; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Presnell, Roan Mountain. Twenty-two grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, several great and great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

    Grace Calhoun Harrison, 90, 451 Coal Chute Road, Elizabethton, died Thursday, September 4, 1997, at Columbia-Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Avery County, N.C. she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Harrison, July 29, 1991, two daughters, and one son. Mrs. Harrison was a member of Centerview Church of Christ. Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnn and Claude Guinn, Maxine Ellis, and Christine "Cricket" Hamm, all of Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Farrell and Linda Harrison and George Ronnie Harrison, all of Elizabethton; a brother, Jeffy Calhoun, Hampton; six granddaughters, Claudia Holloway, Beverly Brewer, Hope White, Joy Harrison, Ronda Harrison, and Connie Lawson, all of Elizabethton; seven grandsons, Jeff Guinn, Sam Harrison, Gabe Harrison, Danny, Donnie, Sam and Tim Jones, all of Elizabethton; and nine great-grandchildren and one great, great-granddaughter survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Grace Calhoun Harrison will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Centerview Church of Christ with Mr. David Irick and Mr. Bobby McGee, mininsters, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Centerview Church of Christ Singers and great granddaughters. Interment will follow at Harrison Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grand-sons-in-law.     Mrs Texie B. Peters, 80, Rt. 2, Hampton, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 1990, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a Unicoi County native but had lived in Mishawaka, Ind., for 15 years before coming to Hampton. She was a daughter of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. Mrs. Peters was a member of Union Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one grandchild. Survivors include her husband, Mike Peters; three daughters, Mrs. Louise Hazlewood, Plymouth, Ind., Mrs. Carolyn Magnuson, Mishawaka, and Mrs. Gail White, Hampton; four sons, Jack R.     Funeral services for Mrs. Texie B. Peters, age 80, of Rt. 2 Hampton, who died Tuesday, August 28, 1990 will be conducted at 8 P.M. Friday in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Rev. Burgess Vincent and Mr. Bill Jones, Minister, officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be family members. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Friday in the Riverside Chapel and at the residence any time.

    Mildred Buchanan McCall, age 94, of Butler, formerly of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord at the home of her daughter on Monday, March 24, 2014, following an extended illness.
    She was the daughter of the late Clarence & Mary Sparks Calhoun and was born in the Linville Falls Community of Avery County, N.C.
    Mildred retired from Unilever Corporation and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of First Christian Church in Elizabethton and a fifty year member of the Tennessee Order of the Eastern Star #163 Sycamore Chapter.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fin G. Buchanan; her second husband, Robert "Bob" McCall; a son, David Buchanan; four brothers; and one sister.
    Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Johnson and husband, Howard, of Butler; one son, Michael Buchanan and wife, Eleanor, Frankfort, IL; fourteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Dimple Stine, Johnson City, and Bea Campbell; and one brother, Gene Calhoun. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM at First Christian Church in Elizabethton.
    A service to honor Mildred's life will follow the visitation at 12:00 PM with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Niles & Lena Onks and Gene Estep.
    The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral service on Wednesday at the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Michael Buchanan, James Buchanan, Niles Onks, Adam Savicz, Dwayne Calhoun and John Clawson. Woodhall Young will serve as honorary pallbearer.
    The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Judy Matthews and Jennifer Clawson for the love and care shown to Mildred during her illness.

    Dimple Margaret Calhoun Stine departed this world on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, after a lengthy illness. She was greatly loved and will be missed. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mary Sparks Calhoun. Dimple was a woman of great faith and was an active member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church for many years. She was a member of the choir and was also actively involved in Awana and the children's ministry. Dimple worked at ITT-North Electric for some time but her passion was baking, gardening, ceramics and knitting. In addition to her parents, Dimple was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank Calhoun, Fred Calhoun, Audie Calhoun, and Harlan Calhoun; and two sisters, Mildred McCall, and Lois Pennington.

    Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 30 years and caregiver, Donald E. Stine, Sr.; a stepson Edward Stine and his wife Janice; a daughter Sherry Hill; and a son Terry Hill, all of whom she greatly loved. The joy of her heart was her beloved grandchildren, Rachel (Stine) Hicks and her husband Jason, Adam Stine, Nathan Stine, and Abigail Stine; and one newborn great-grandchild, McKenna Hicks.

    The family will receive friends to share memories from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, Johnson City. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 7:00pm with Pastor Roy Yelton officiating. A Committal Service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, October 14, 2016 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

    Lucille Powell, 87, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Hermitage Health Care Center. Lucille was born in Carter County to the late Oscar and Fannie Presnell Calhoun. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Elisha Powell; two sons, Timothy Powell and Robert Powell; two daughters, Barbara Fraley and Iva Jean Hyder; one granddaughter, Wendy Garland; one sister, Joyce Pierce; two brothers, H.L. Calhoun and Doris Calhoun; and a son-in-law, James Hicks.
    Lucille was a homemaker and had formerly worked at Winn-Dixie as a sales clerk. She was a loving mother and grandmother and loved everyone she met, she never knew a stranger. Lucille was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting and cooking Sunday dinner for her family.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Cleo Hicks and her partner, Michael Elliott, Linda Garland and husband Michael, Phyllis Crain and husband Glenn and Brenda Rasmussen, all of Elizabethton; her sons, Larry Powell and wife Patricia, Randy Powell and wife Loretta and Elisha Powell Jr. "Pooner" and wife Neci, all of Elizabethton; a son-in-law, Bill Fraley, of Elizabethton; one sister, Lillian Watts, of Mishawaka, Ind.; one brother, Roger Calhoun, also of Mishawaka, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
    A service to celebrate the life of Lucille Powell will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, May 11, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dick Brand, soloist, and Rev. Ronnie Campbell. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at the residence of her daughter, Cleo Hicks, at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    Elkhart, Ind. - Joyce L. Pierce, 81, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Riverside Village. She was born September 30, 1933, in Shell Creek, Tenn., to Oscar and Fannie (Presnell) Calhoun. She married Billy Ray Pierce, who preceded her in death on May 13, 1979. She was also preceded in death by a son, Nickie L. Walker, in 1978, and two brothers, H.L. Calhoun in 2010, and Dorse Calhoun, in 1931. Joyce was a homemaker who loved to crochet. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, singing at her church (the Freewill Baptist Church in Elizabethton, Tenn.) and listening to country and western music. She was known for her chocolate gravy. Surviving are two grandsons, Shannon and Aaron Walker, both of St. Cloud, Fla; two sisters, Lillian Potter of Elkhart and Lucille Powell of Elizabethton, Tenn.; an brother, Roger (Sandy) Calhoun of Elkhart; a sister-in-law, Nancy Calhoun of Mishawaka; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the 3 p.m. Thursday, January 22, celebration of life service at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Rick Pirtle from the Riverview General Baptist Church will preside and cremation will follow the service.

    ELIZABETHTON - William "Bill" Zane Peters, age 85, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

    Bill was born in Hampton, Tennessee to the late Mike and Texie Calhoun Peters.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Peters; and two sisters, Louise Hazlewood and Gail White; his second wife, Peggy Smith Peters; and his dog and companion, "Pandora".

    Bill had worked as a pipefitter and was both a United States Army veteran and a United States Navy veteran. He was of the Protestant faith and attended Prayer Tabernacle, where he served as a deacon. Bill enjoyed riding motorcycles, woodworking, shooting muzzleloaders, riding horses and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles sports fan.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of forty three years, Mary Tyree Peters, of the home; six children, Billy Manwaring and wife Carmen, of Dallas, TX, Kitty Moore and husband Ralph, of Elizabethton, Gregory Zane Peters, of Elizabethton, TN, Charles "Cowboy" Webb, of Johnson City, TN, Wendy Webb Avery, of Johnson City, TN, and Jeremy Daniel Peters, of the home; eight grandchildren, Samantha, Zane, Julia, Stephanie, T.J., Kristi, Tamrah and Rylan; fourteen great grandchildren; two brothers, George "Buster" Peters and wife Nancy, of Deer Park, NY and Steve Peters and wife Sherrie, of Jonesborough, TN; and one sister, Carolyn Magnuson and husband Terry, of Mishawaka, IN.

    A service to honor and celebrate the life of William "Bill" Zane Peters will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 29, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Johnny Hilton and Pastor Mack Presnell, officiating. Music will be provided by Ralph Moore, soloist. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday, or at the residence at other times.

    The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Al Garcia, Shawn Rivers, Joe Currington, Jim Kiser, Smokey Boling and Darrell Wagner.

    The family would like to express a special thanks to the emergency room staff at Johnson City Medical Center and also to the strangers who helped at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Johnson City.

    BUTLER — Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson, age 64, of Butler, passed away at her home on Thursday, July 14, 2016.

    Catherine was born in Carter County to the late Fin G. Buchanan and Mildred Calhoun Buchanan McCall.

    In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, David Buchanan; and her step father, Bob McCall.

    Catherine was a registered nurse, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Nursing Management. She had worked locally with the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and Mountain States Health Alliance. Her nieces and nephews were very special to her and she loved to shop with them whenever the opportunity arose. She and her husband, Howard, are both members of First Methodist Church in Elizabethton. She also served as Chaplin for the Order of the Eastern Star and was a graduate of Culinary School. In addition to shopping, she enjoyed cooking and crafting.

    Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 36 years, Howard W. Johnson, of the home; a brother, Michael Buchanan and wife Eleanor, of Frankfort, Illinois; her step children, Rob Johnson, of Ohio, Jennifer Maryanski, of Knoxville, Michael Johnson, of Indiana, and Rebecca Swing, of Wisconsin. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Monday, July 18, 2016, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Niles and Lena Onks. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Monday.

    The graveside service will follow in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton. Active pallbearers will be her nephews and step sons. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Mountain Home Construction.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to her special friends and care givers, Jennifer Clawson and Judy Matthews for the love and care they gave to Catherine during her illness.
