Tommy Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, was dead on arrival at Johnson County Memorial Hospital after a logging accident Monday morning.

A life-long resident of Johnson County, Mr. Arnold was employed as a logger and was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Arnold, in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Faye Brickey Arnold; one daughter, April Dawn Arnold, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Park Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler; one sister, Mrs. Lynn (Sandy) Snyder, Rt. 3, Butler; his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Victor Broyles, Rt. 3, Butler; and his paternal grandfather, Ed Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler. Several aunts and uncles also survive.

Funeral services for Tommy Lewis Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, who died Monday morning, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Little Doe Baptist Church, with the Rev. R. A. Royston and Mark Sparks, minister, officiating. Interment will be in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. The Sugar Grove Quartet will be in charge of music.

Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, will be Carroll Matherly, Jerry Matherly, Jerry Garland, Larry Garland, Bob Atwood and Carroll Fletcher.

Park J. Arnold, age 87, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on August 9, 1926, to the late E.W. and Eliza Pleasant Arnold. In addition to his parents, Park was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Arnold; sister, Bernice Matherly; brothers: Delmer Arnold, J.E. Arnold and James Arnold. Park was a United States Veteran, having honorably served in the Navy. He was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church, where he also served as Deacon. Park was a hard, honest worker and like most people during his time, he was a proud farmer. He also worked for Tri-State Growers, delivering feed and supplies to his fellow farmers. When crops were ready, Park would haul beans to many destinations. He had also worked for the school system driving precious children safely to school and back home. Park is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 65 years, Evelyn "Sue" Arnold; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Lynn Snyder; brother, Elwood Arnold; grandchildren: Rick Snyder and wife, Miranda, Tom Snyder and wife, Sally, and April Grindstaff and husband, Kenny, all of Butler, TN; great grandchildren: Megan Grindstaff Hart and husband, Casey, Joshua Grindstaff, Brianna Snyder, Dawson Snyder and Addy Snyder; daughter-in-law, Faye Brickey, of NC; special sister-in-law, Corine Arnold; sisters-in-law, Mary Arnold of Tucson, AZ, and Mary Kate Arnold, of Butler, TN; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2013, at the Little Doe Baptist Church with Pastor Kreg Smith to officiate. Special Guest Speaker will be Claude Duncan. Graveside Service & Interment with Military Honors, conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013, from the Butler Memorial Cemetery. Evelyn Sue Arnold, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at her home. Evelyn was born on November 9, 1930 to the late Victor Broyles and Maude Pierce Broyles in Old Butler of Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Park Arnold, who passed away in 2013; her son, Tommy Arnold; siblings, Ethel Garland, Ralph Broyles, and Earl Broyles.

Sue was a long time employee of the local factories such as Leco, Levi Strauss, and Burlington. She enjoyed crocheting and making special things for her family and friends. She was also well known for her homemade rolls and cinnamon rolls. Sue was a devoted member of Little Doe Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Sandy Snyder and husband Lynn, who she loved like a son; sister, Corine Arnold; grandchildren, April Grindstaff and husband Kenny; Ricky Snyder and wife Miranda, who was also her caretaker, Tom Snyder and wife Sally; great grandchildren, Megan Hart and husband Casey, Joshua Grindstaff and wife Taylor, Brianna Snyder, Dawson Snyder and girlfriend Shea Huyard, Addy Snyder, Maston Snyder; great great grandchildren, Sloane Hart, Carter Hart, Collins Hart, Isabella Grindstaff; best friend, DeEtte Hampton; daughter-in-law, Faye Brickey; also several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her three special fur buddies (Skip, Hank & Boone) who she loved dearly.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Little Doe Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Kreg Smith officiating. The graveside service will follow at the Butler Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ricky Snyder, Tom Snyder, Dawson Snyder, Maston Snyder, Kenny Grindstaff, Joshua Grindstaff, Casey Hart, Carter Hart, Jerry Garland, and Herb Hampton.

Family lore says that Eliza Ruth Pleasant was the daughter of Garfield Pleasant and his first wife Eliza J. Morley. Further research is required to prove this. Eliza Ruth Pleasant would have been the third child of Garfield and Eliza J. Morley, and was born on 23 Jun 1904. Eliza J. Morley Pleasant died on 18 Aug 1904. Prior to the 1910 Johnson County census, Garfield married Ella O. Treadway. The 1910 census lists:

Reportedly, Garfield did not want the responsibility of raising a newborn child, and so Eliza Ruth Pleasant was raised by her grandparents. Hopefully, a birth record can be found which will prove this relationship.

Rev. Victor Lewis Broyles, 79, Rt. 3, Butler, died Saturday night, July 14, 1984 in the Johnson County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Marion, Va., he was the son of Henry Luther and Senia Comer Broyles and had lived a number of years in Sullivan County before moving to Johnson County.

Rev. Broyles was ordained in the Baptist Church in 1953 and had served the following churches: Pierce Baptist Church, Sink Valley Baptist, Fish Springs Baptist and Mt. View Baptist Church. He was a member of the Pierce Baptist Church and also the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge No. 679.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters and by a son, Earl Broyles in 1971.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maude Pierce Broyles; three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Garland, Mrs. Park (Sue) Arnold, both of Butler, and Mrs. J. D. (Corine) Smith, Elkhart, Ind.; ; one son, Ralph Broyles, Mt. Vernon, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Zella McReynolds of Bristol, and Mrs. Hubert (Viola) Greene and Mrs. Hoover (Dorothy) Crowe, both of Elizabethton; and four brothers, Comer Broyles of Elizabethton, Howard Broyles of Bluff City, Joe Broyles, Fort Myers, Fla., and Walter "Paige" Broyles of Butler. Twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Greene and Rev. Art Greer officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. The Timber Ridge Quartet will be in charge of music.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Clarence Snodgrass, Rev. Dolphus Forrester, Harvey White, Rev. R. A. Royston, Rev. David Cunningham, Rev. Hubert Greene, Rev. Alvin Greene, Rev. Richard White and members of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge No. 679 will be in charge of graveside services. Mrs. Maude Ethel Broyles, 84, Rt. 3, Butler, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 1991 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness.

Mrs. Broyles was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Crumley and Cora Presnell Pierce.

She was a member of the Pierce Town Baptist Church.

Mrs. Broyles was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Victor Broyles, a son, Earl Broyles, and two sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Garland, Mrs. Park (Sue) Arnold and Corine; and one son, Ralph Broyles.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday from Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Howard Estep officiating. The Little Doe Baptist Church Choir will be in charge of music.

Interment will be 11 a.m. Friday in Butler Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of the Appalachian Home Health Care Center and Dr. Donald Walters. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence at any time. There were two persons named John H. Arnold. The first was a son of Meredith Dugger Arnold, and was born in about . He appeared in the 1850 Johnson County, TN census as an 11 year old son of Meredith. He could not be identified in subsequent census records for Johnson County, meaning he either moved out of the county, or that he died.
The second John H. Arnold appears in the 1860 Johnson County census as a 5 year old member of Meredith Dugger's household. In this listing, he is placed out of birth year sequence, and is listed at the bottom. In the 1870 census, he is listed as 15 year old John H. McQueen in the household of Clara McQueen, who is the daughter of Meredith D. Arnold. Clara had married Wiley A. McQueen on 7 Oct 1860 following the 1860 census. Their daughter Hannah is also listed in the Clara Arnold McQueen's 1870 household. Since the marriage of Clara Arnold to Wiley A. McQueen follows the birth of John H. Arnold by five years, it is uncertain who his father is.
