Earlier English spelling of the family name was "Boothe." Jane's parents were Joseph Boothe (born in Pennsylvania) and Sarah Dutton (born in Virginia). The Boothe family moved to Virginia while it was still a British colony. In the mid-1790s, the family moved to Washington County, Tenn., near Jonesborough (before Tennessee was a state).
